Internal Compass (by Len Winneroski)

UnknownYou guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. – Psalm 73:24

I learned something interesting a few weeks ago. Did you know that some animals can actually sense the earth’s magnetic field?  Scientists think that a magnetic mineral called magnetite (Fe3O4) may explain how animals can navigate with precision during migration. According to Laura Klappenbach,

“Behavioral studies have revealed that many animals including honey bees, sharks, sea turtles, rays, homing pigeons, migratory birds, tuna, and salmon all have magnetic sense. The details of how these animals actually feel the earth’s magnetic field is not yet known. Researchers have found, though, that each of these animals has deposits of magnetite in their nervous systems. Magnetite, small magnet-like crystals, align themselves with magnetic fields and might act like microscopic compass needles. These crystals may be the key to revealing how animals sense magnetic fields.”(1)

Believe it or not, magnetite (Fe3O4) has also been detected in the human brain. I bet that men have more magnetite in their brains than women. That would explain why men don’t like to stop to ask for directions and why men are less intelligent than women. Our heads are actually full of rocks.

God is amazing. The more I learn about how things work the more in awe that I am of our Creator. As I have been thinking about magnetite it made me think about an internal compass that is way cooler than magnetite and is available to everyone. Jesus said that He would send the Spirit of truth to indwell and guide those who entrust their lives to Him.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:15-17

Following the leading of the Holy Spirit is kind of like following an internal compass. The more that I pray, read the Bible and look to Christ for direction, the more that I am able to sense the sweet presence of God in my life. The Holy Spirit helps me to monitor my thoughts and actions and prompts me to seek forgiveness from God and others when I sin. The Holy Spirit also helps me to understand new truths from the Bible and how to apply these new truths to my life. The Holy Spirit has brought an inner sense of love, joy and peace into my life that is hard to explain. Life with the Spirit of truth has to be experienced to be understood.

So if you don’t have this inner compass today I urge you to look to Jesus. Admit that you need Christ’s love and forgiveness and He will send the Spirit of truth into your heart to comfort and guide you. The earth’s magnetic field fluctuates but God’s love for you never changes.
