The Egret and the Bluebird (by D.A. Cobb)

Early yesterday morning I received a distressing phone call. A friend from Florida called to tell me her niece found her four month old son dead in his crib. I cannot even begin to imagine the heartbreak and emotions such an event would trigger. She also called to ask me to pray for the mother and her little angel and asked me why such a thing could happen. My only answer was God wanted this little child to come home and for reasons only He understands. Through the years I have read verse upon verse on how Jesus opened His consuming and loving arms to the little ones.

Hear the words of the Messiah,

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

That afternoon my friend invited the grieving and distraught young mother to come to her home for coffee and hopefully some rest. They went outside and sat on the patio and within a few minutes an egret, with long legs, long neck and slim beak made its entrance and settled in the bird bath just a few feet away. At the same time a bluebird came and perched near to them on the fence surrounding the patio.

These unexpected visitors stayed, almost motionless, for hours. I would like to believe Christ sent this pair, one with its cluster of milky white distinctive feathers and the other for its calming beauty to console, offer peace and provide hope to this now childless mother. Only Jesus could orchestrate such a meeting. I believe my friend and her niece witnessed a miracle. I also feel our Savior was either on the patio with them or at the very least close by.

Remember the definition I gave in Volume 2.  “A coincidence is a miracle that wishes to remain anonymous.” He sent these birds as a sign for eventual healing and to show His unconditional love at this time of horrible grief and sadness.

“How great are his signs, and mighty his wonders!

His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;

His dominion endures from generation to generation.” Daniel 4:3

As I learned in my studies for the Stephen Ministry we can listen, advise and pray but only Christ can do the healing. He will continue to work in this woman’s heart with the gentle touch

of both the Father and His Son.

We who are born again know this little cherub is now resting in a place called Paradise.
