Dream Readers (by Len Winneroski)

Unknown“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28 (New International Version)

I love dreams.  In my dreams I can fly, I never need sleep, I am wiser than Solomon, I can run faster than a gazelle that is being chased by a cheetah, and I am not afraid to say anything that is burning in my heart.  Scientists tell us that humans dream all through the night, but that our best dreams occur during R.E.M. (rapid eye movement) sleep.  During REM sleep our brains are extremely active.  REM sleep can last as long as 45 minutes and healthy individuals enter REM sleep every 90-100 minutes.  Most dreams are in color and Sigmund Freud believed that dreams are a “window into our unconscious.” (1)

What do you dream about? What is God’s dream for the world? Are they the same dream? In the tenth chapter and verse of the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (NIV).

A full abundant life… sounds good doesn’t it?  What is abundant life anyway?  I believe that Jesus told us.  Jesus demonstrated abundant life by washing some dirty, stinky feet (John 13).  After Jesus washed his friends’ feet He told them, “a new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John, 13:34-35, NIV)  Dirty, stinky feet…we all have them.  So why do I focus on the stinky feet of others when my own feet reek?  Could it be that I’m blaming my own stink on others?

I believe that God’s dreams and purpose for our lives are pretty obvious.  What am I passionate about?  What things do I always seem to find time to do no matter how busy that I am?  Is there anything that I would do it all day long for free? What do others say that I’m great at?  How would I complete this sentence, Lord I feel the closest to you and the most alive when I am____________  ?

Dear Lord, please help me to seek your dream for my life. Forgive me when I am more focused on the stink around me than the sweet fragrance of my Savior.  Lord, help me to dream great dreams and to have the courage to believe that anything is possible if it is your will for my life.
