Mountain Cross (by D.A. Cobb)

It was powerfully dark. We had just driven down the mountain from our future retirement home nestled three thousand feet above on the southern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  After saying goodnight to the security guard I turned onto State Route 11 and headed for Greenville and a good night’s rest.

We had driven for only a few moments when my wife noticed a brilliant light coming from the mountaintop. There were no homes in the area, no suspicious car headlights and no emergency vehicles winding their way to the top. What she saw was a glowing and magnificent cross in a remote area of still-to-be-developed property. It was as though God was telling her something was about to happen and giving her the assurance He would watch over us throughout. The next day was Good Friday. That morning I suffered a massive heart attack.

“For the message of the cross is foolishness

to those who are perishing,

but to us who are being saved

it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18

Today a beautiful rustic chapel rests on the site where, on that fateful evening, God chose to reveal His cross of mercy and grace, His promise of care and love and Calvary’s  image of hope and salvation.

For some unknown reason this event remained hidden from memory and buried deep within this grateful author’s soul for all these many years. Only recently has it been recalled. Why an event with such eternal consequence remained below the level of remembrance will become a lifetime question. Only He knows the reason and understands the purpose.

I began Volume 1 of God is Everywhere with a verse taken from the prophet Isaiah,

“O LORD, you are my God;

I will exalt you and praise your name,

for in perfect faithfulness

you have done marvelous things,

things planned long ago.”

Isaiah 25:1

Yes, God is indeed everywhere.
