There are two days that most people worry about: Yesterday and Tomorrow. Jesus tells us that those are the two day we should actually worry the least about. We worry about yesterday – the mistakes we’ve made and what we wish we could do over. The truth is that there is nothing we can do to change our yesterdays. So our worrying is wasted. We also worry about tomorrow – the problems it may bring and the challenges we may face. Again we cannot control our tomorrows. Tomorrow is always a day away and out of our grasp. So again our worrying is wasted.
Jesus doesn’t want us wasting our time worrying about anything. Jesus wants us to be free to live our lives in the present moment. With each new day we make decisions about our life. With each new day we can set our course, set off in any direction or alter our course, if need be. We most likely will make our share of mistakes. And we will still have concerns. Each new day brings all the concerns we can handle. Our concerns become unbearable when we add our concern for yesterday and tomorrow onto today.
Jesus calls us to live one day at a time. He knew that much of our worry is out of our control. Jesus wants us to understand that God gives us today. And as we live our lives seeking Him, we are in a safe place. Jesus promises that our heavenly Father will provide us with everything we need not everything we might want.
When I’m tempted to worry about any of life’s concerns, I find that it helps to remind myself of the many times I’ve given in to worry and how things never came to pass as I had feared – which is most of the time.
So today make it one of your promises to live just one day at a time. And when you find yourself tempted to worry remind yourself of Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:32-33: “Your heavenly Father knows all your needs, and He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.”
Let us pray: There are times Lord that I find myself worrying about my yesterdays or tomorrows and missing the joy of the moment. Lord I want to live just one day at a time. I want to seek to become all You are calling me to become today. I want to live a full and joy filled life today. I know I can’t do this on my own – I must rely on You – on Your Son Jesus to walk with me in the power of Your Mighty Holy Spirit. So Lord I free myself of my worries by trusting in the Name that is above every Name – Jesus. Amen.
